Arrowhead Transit Launches Public Input Phase for RideSmart 2025 Redesign

Arrowhead Transit Launches Public Input Phase for RideSmart 2025 Redesign

CAMBRIDGE, MN — Arrowhead Transit is asking Chisago and Isanti County residents to help shape the future of local transportation as it launches the public engagement phase of RideSmart 2025, a complete redesign of transit service in the region.
From now until May 1, the public is invited to review the draft plan and offer feedback through in-person meetings, online surveys, and printed comment forms. This redesign reflects months of planning, community listening, and a clear message from riders: our current transit system is not meeting today’s needs.

“We’ve heard it directly from riders and from the data—transit has to work better for people,” said Brandon Nurmi, Director of Arrowhead Transit. “RideSmart 2025 is our commitment to create a simpler, more reliable, more accessible system that reflects how people live and move today.”

A System Ready for Change

According to federal data reported to the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), ridership in Chisago and Isanti counties remained relatively flat for years before Arrowhead Transit assumed operations in 2021. Since then, annual ridership has climbed to more than 66,000 rides in 2023, with early 2024 data showing even stronger use—particularly in Isanti County.
Yet those numbers don’t tell the full story. In a recent public survey conducted as part of the RideSmart 2025 planning process:
  • Many residents said they’ve used Arrowhead Transit in the past two years—but use is inconsistent and infrequent
  • The #1 reason people don’t ride is that service isn’t close enough or doesn’t run when they need it
  • Most riders said they rely on transit due to limited mobility, lack of vehicle access, or cost
  • Over 90% of respondents agreed that public transit improves quality of life and supports the economy—but less than half felt the current system meets community needs
Local Transit Manager, Karol Strube said, “This is a public redesign process. It’s not top-down—it’s shaped by real feedback from people in the community.”

What’s Happening Now

From April 1 through May 1, Arrowhead Transit will:
  • Release the draft redesign plan at www.arrowheadtransit.com/RideSmart-2025
  • Open a public comment period through digital and printed forms
  • Host in-person meetings in Cambridge, North Branch, and other towns
  • Meet with employers, service providers, and civic organizations to gather direct feedback
The final plan will be published in early May. The new service will officially launch on June 2, 2025, bringing simplified routes, consistent $5 fares, easier scheduling tools, and improved access to work, healthcare, schools, shopping, and government services.

Community Leaders Back the Vision

Local leaders and regional advocates are already showing support.

“Reliable, accessible public transit is essential for North Branch’s economic growth, ensuring that businesses can connect with employees and customers more efficiently. The RideSmart 2025 redesign will enhance workforce mobility, improve customer access, and strengthen our local economy—making North Branch an even better place to live and do business.” - Melissa Collins, Executive Director of the North Branch Area Chamber of Commerce.

“As the Coordinator for the East Central Regional Transportation Coordinating Council, I am delighted to observe Arrowhead Transit’s dedication to maintaining high standards in public transportation. Their new initiative, RideSmart 2025, represents a well-researched redesign of the Isanti and Chisago County system, with the goal of enhancing service quality. This new structure simplifies scheduling, streamlines routes, and ensures availability when needed, making it more attractive to both current and potential riders. RideSmart 2025 broadens Arrowhead's reach into unserved and underserved areas, facilitating longer-distance travel that supports opportunities for individuals to live independently, promotes healthy living, and enhances the quality of life for all.” - Karen Onan East Central Regional Transportation Coordinating Council

“Reliable transportation is essential for our residents to access vital services, medical appointments, and often times employment. As Isanti County has previously managed public transportation for the community in the past, we recognize the challenges that come with operating rural public transit systems, and we appreciate the dedication of those working to ensure mobility for our community. As these changes take effect, we hope they will enhance service efficiency and better meet the needs of our residents.” - Amanda Usher, Isanti County Administrator.
